Hattingen is a town in the northern part of the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the Ruhr river. It dates to 1396, when it was granted permission to build city walls, and later grew into an industrial center known for coal mining from 1720 and steel production from 1853.
