Heijo-kyo was the capital of Japan for most of the Nara period, serving from 710 to 740 and again from 745 to 784. Its site lies within the modern city of Nara, and its former imperial palace is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing the historic monuments of ancient Nara.
