Helmstedt is a town on the eastern edge of Lower Saxony, Germany, and the capital of the District of Helmstedt. It preserves a historic core of Romanesque and Renaissance buildings alongside numerous timber-framed houses, and was once home to a university and held Hanseatic city status. During the division of Germany, Helmstedt was the site of the Helmstedt-Marienborn border crossing, the busiest crossing point on the inner German border and the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin.
