Hengyang is the second-largest city of Hunan Province, China, straddling the Xiang River about 160 kilometers south of the provincial capital Changsha. Nicknamed the Wild Goose City for its historical role as a migratory bird rest stop, and the Bright Pearl in Southern China for its economic importance, it serves as a major hub linking water, rail and highway routes and is home to three provincial universities. The 2020 census recorded a total population of 6,645,243, with about 1.29 million in the metropolitan area.
