Herning is a Danish town on the Jutland peninsula in the Central Denmark Region, seat of Herning Municipality. It was established at the beginning of the 1790s during a period of heath reclamation as a commercial center and became a market town in 1913, twice earning the title of Danish City of the Year. As of 1 January 2026 the population was 52,264, the twelfth most populous urban area in Denmark, and the town hosts Messecenter Herning, described as the largest exhibition center in Scandinavia, alongside the Herning Art Museum and three buildings designed by architect Jorn Utzon. Its Jyske Bank Boxen arena hosted the World Handball Championship finals in 2019 and 2025.
