Heuneburg

The Heuneburg is a prehistoric Celtic hillfort in southern Germany, near Herbertingen in Baden-Wurttemberg by the Danube, that measures about 300 by 150 meters and is considered one of the most important early Celtic centers in Central Europe during the Hallstatt Iron Age of the 7th to 5th centuries BC. Some scholars identify it with the city of Pyrene mentioned by Herodotus. Around 600 BC it was fortified with a mudbrick wall roughly 6 meters high, an architectural style unique in Celtic Europe and influenced by Mediterranean building traditions, and it may have controlled a surrounding territory of more than 1,000 square kilometers, with excavations at the site and its surrounding settlements and burial grounds finding bronze workshops and imported Greek pottery and amber before its abandonment by the 5th century BC.
