Hierapytna, also recorded as Hierapydna or Hiera, was a town of ancient Crete that Strabo places at the narrowest part of the island, opposite Minoa. The Stadiasmus Maris Magni puts it 180 stadia from Biennus, agreeing with the twenty Roman miles recorded in the Peutinger Table, and the town was of great antiquity, with its founding traditionally credited to the Corybantes; it is said to have carried the successive names Cyrba, Pytna, Camirus and Hierapytna. An inscription among the Oxford marbles records an alliance between Hierapytna and the neighboring city of Priansus, and both autonomous and Roman Imperial coins survive from the city, most commonly bearing a palm tree.
