Hippana

Hippana was an ancient town in Sicily at Monte dei Cavalli, in the modern comune of Prizzi, Italy, positioned between the Tyrrhenian coast and the Mediterranean midway between Palermo and Agrigentum. The site was occupied from the Sican period in the ninth to sixth centuries BC through the Hellenistic era. According to the historian Polybius it was taken by storm by the Romans in the First Punic War in 260 BC, and excavations begun in 2007 uncovered a Greek theatre, among the earliest known in Sicily and Magna Graecia, built in the second half of the fourth century BC before the destruction of the city by the Romans in 258 BC.
