Hobart is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania, set on the estuary of the River Derwent beneath Mount Wellington. It was founded in 1804 as a British penal colony, making it Australia's second-oldest capital after Sydney, and it sits beside what is described as the second-deepest natural port in the world. Today Hobart is Tasmania's financial and administrative center and a home port for Antarctic operations, drawing visitors to its convict-era architecture, Salamanca Market and the Museum of Old and New Art; its population was 254,930 in 2024.
