Its name means Gourd Island, after a fiddle-shaped peninsula in Longgang District shaped like a bottle gourd, and the city was formerly known as Jinxi until it was renamed in 1994. Covering 10,582 square kilometers with a 237-kilometer coastline, Huludao is a major industrial center home to Asia's largest zinc smelter and the Bohai Shipyard, where China builds nuclear submarines.
