Ilirska Bistrica is a town in the Inner Carniola region of southwestern Slovenia, serving as the administrative seat of the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica. Its name dates to the Austrian Empire period, when the surrounding area belonged to the Kingdom of Illyria between 1816 and 1849, with the adjective added to distinguish it from other towns of similar name in the region. The town recorded a population of 4,539 at the 2012 census.
