Innsbruck is the capital of Austria's Tyrol state and the country's fifth-largest city, on the River Inn near its confluence with the Wipp Valley about 30 kilometers from the Brenner Pass, with a 2024 population of 132,188. It became capital of all Tyrol in 1429 and was transformed into a European cultural center under the 15th-century residence of Emperor Maximilian I; in the 20th century it hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1964 and 1976.
