Inverness is a city in the Highlands of northern Scotland, long regarded as the de facto capital of the Scottish Highlands. It serves as the administrative centre for the Highland Council region and is a regional hub for healthcare, education, business, transport and culture across the wider Highlands and Islands. The city was formerly the county town of Inverness-shire before that county was absorbed into the larger Highland Council area.
