FAQs

Why did Ioannina prosper under Ali Pasha?

The Greek National Tourism Organisation (Visit Greece) states: "During the Ottoman period, it was ruled by Ali Pasha, a controversial yet charismatic figure: a ruthless leader and, at the same time, a visionary politician. Under his reign, Ioannina experienced great prosperity and evolved into a major commercial and intellectual centre, rich in goldsmithing, textiles, and cultural exchanges with the West."
