Isafjordur

Isafjordur is a town in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland, the largest settlement of the Westfjords peninsula and the administrative center of the Isafjardarbaer municipality, built on a sand spit in Skutulsfjordur, a fjord connected to the larger Isafjardardjup. First settled in the ninth century by Helgi Magri Hrolfsson according to the Landnamabok, it was granted municipal status in 1786 and had approximately 2,744 residents as of 1 January 2023. The town holds the oldest collection of timber-frame houses in Iceland, structures from 1757 to 1784 built around the eighteenth century Danish trading post Nedstikaupstadur, and its economy, historically centered on fishing, has diversified toward tourism.
