Isca Dumnoniorum

Isca Dumnoniorum was a Roman legionary fortress established around AD 55 as the base of the Second Augustan Legion, on the site of present-day Exeter in Devon, England. After the legion moved to Caerleon around AD 75, the site was converted into a civilian settlement that became the tribal capital of the Dumnonii and grew to roughly 92 acres by the late 2nd century. The settlement prospered as a trading center into the 4th century before declining sharply after AD 380, and about 70 percent of its Roman city walls survive today, forming the basis of the defenses that Alfred the Great later built into medieval Exeter.
