Jablonec nad Nisou

Jablonec nad Nisou is a statutory city in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, about 7 kilometers southeast of Liberec and 83 kilometers northeast of Prague. First mentioned in a Latin document of 1356 as Jablonecz, a name meaning little apple tree, it only achieved town status in 1866 under Emperor Franz Joseph I. From the eighteenth century the city became known for glass and costume jewelry production, especially bijou, a heritage preserved today at the Museum of Glass and Costume Jewellery, established in 1904; as of January 2026 the population was about 46,206, the second largest city in the Liberec Region. The Mseno Reservoir, built between 1906 and 1909, is one of the largest inner-city water areas in Europe at roughly 42 hectares, and the functionalist New Town Hall, built from 1930 to 1933, is protected as a national cultural monument.
