Jaluit

Jaluit is an atoll in the Marshall Islands that served as the administrative center of the islands under German colonial rule from 1885, when the Jaluit Company administered the territory on Germany's behalf, and then under Japan's South Seas Mandate from 1914, hosting several hundred Japanese settlers and, by 1943, a garrison of about 2,300 troops before repeated American bombing. It ceased to be the territorial capital after World War II, and today it is a legislative district of the Marshall Islands with about 1,409 residents, most on Jabor islet, and much of the atoll is protected as a Ramsar wetland.
