Jefferson City is the capital of the U.S. state of Missouri and the county seat of Cole County, anchoring a metropolitan statistical area in mid Missouri. Named for Thomas Jefferson, it sits on the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau on the southern side of the Missouri River, and at the 2020 census ranked as the ninth least populous U.S. state capital.
