Jepara is a town on the north coast of Central Java, Indonesia, seat of Jepara Regency northeast of Semarang, with 85,970 residents as of mid-2024. Known as the World Carving Centre for its Javanese teak wood carving tradition, it was an important port in the 16th century under the rule of Queen Kalinyamat and fought repeated conflicts with Portuguese Malacca between 1513 and 1574, and it is the birthplace of Kartini, a pioneer of women's rights in Indonesia.
