Jieyang

Jieyang is a prefecture-level city in eastern Guangdong province, China, bordering Shantou, Chaozhou, Meizhou and Shanwei and facing the South China Sea. Established as a garrison in 214 BC during the Qin dynasty, it is known as the Ancient City of Eastern Guangdong for its more than 2,200 years of history, and it was elevated to prefecture-level city status in 1991. The 2020 census recorded 5,183,758 residents across its five county-level divisions, and the city is the hometown of many overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, sharing the Chaoshan dialect and culture with neighboring Shantou and Chaozhou. Its economy spans traditional manufacturing in hardware and textiles, distribution of Chinese herbal medicines centered on Puning, petrochemical energy, e-commerce and agriculture.
