Jilin City is the second-largest city and former capital of Jilin province in northeast China, notable as the only major Chinese city that shares its name with its province. Its population was about 3.6 million at the 2020 census, with about 1.9 million in the metropolitan area. Known as the "River City" for the Songhua River that surrounds much of it, Jilin City co-hosted the Asian Winter Games in 2007.
