Jingdezhen

Jingdezhen is a prefecture-level city in eastern Jiangxi province, China, bordering Anhui to the north, with a documented history spanning more than 2,000 years. It took its current name in 1004 CE, after the era name of Emperor Zhenzong of the Song dynasty, during whose reign its porcelain production first rose to fame, and it has been producing Chinese ceramics for at least 1,000 years, for much of that time the finest and most important in China. The 2018 population was 1,669,057, and during the Cultural Revolution the city produced large quantities of porcelain Mao badges and statues. Known as the Porcelain Capital, Jingdezhen saw its porcelain industry sites designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2026, and it has attracted thousands of young artists, known as jingpiao, drawn by affordable living and access to its ceramic heritage.
