Jingzhou

Eastern Asia

Jingzhou is a prefecture level city in southern Hubei province, China, on the Yangtze River. The ancient city of Ying, within its present boundaries, served as the capital of the state of Chu for more than four centuries beginning in 689 BC, and during the Three Kingdoms period the city was lost by the general Guan Yu, an episode that gave rise to a still used Chinese phrase about carelessness costing Jingzhou. The city preserves city walls dating to 1646 with a perimeter of over ten kilometers, and its museum displays Warring States artifacts and a well preserved 2,000 year old corpse; its 2020 population was 5,231,180.
