Jolo is a municipality and the capital of Sulu province, in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, on Jolo Island in the Sulu Archipelago. Established in 1904, it had a 2024 census population of 152,067 across 22.24 square kilometers and was historically the seat of the Sultanate of Sulu. Postwar development in the town was disrupted by the 1974 Siege of Jolo, which destroyed infrastructure and drove capital flight; about 99 percent of residents today practice Islam.
