Kalaureia

Southern Europe

Kalaureia is an island near the coast of Troezen in the Peloponnese, forming part of the modern island of Poros in the Aegean. It was the site of a sanctuary of Poseidon whose Doric temple was built around 520 BC, and during the Archaic period it was the center of an amphictyony, a religious league of seven Greek city-states including Athens, Aegina and Epidaurus. The orator Demosthenes took sanctuary at the temple of Poseidon after being condemned to death by pro-Macedonian forces, and died there on October 16, 322 BC. Swedish archaeologists have excavated the site since 1894, with renewed work beginning in 1997.
