Karabük

Karabük is a city in the Black Sea region of Turkey, seat of Karabük Province and Karabük District, near the Filyos River formed by the Araç and Soğanlı rivers, at an elevation of 301 meters. Its municipality had 125,403 residents in 2022. The city began as a settlement of only 13 houses in the early Turkish Republic and developed after one of the country's first steel factories was built there in 1939; it gained township status in 1938, became a district center in 1953 and provincial status in 1995. The Kardemir iron and steel works remains the city's economic foundation, using local dolomite and limestone alongside coal and manganese from nearby Zonguldak.
