Karratha is a city in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Australia, established in 1968 to house the workforce for Hamersley Iron's mining operations and later petroleum and liquefied natural gas projects, adjacent to the port of Dampier. It had a population of 17,013 at the 2021 census, and its name is drawn from a local Aboriginal cattle station and is generally understood to mean good or soft country.
