Kars is a city in northeast Turkey, seat of Kars Province, with a population of 91,450 at the 2022 census. It served as the capital of the Bagratid kingdom of Armenia from 929 to 961, when its well known cathedral was built, and it later became capital of the Russian Empire's Kars Oblast after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 before returning to Turkish control under the 1921 Treaty of Kars.
