Karviná is a city in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, on the Olza River in the Ostrava Basin on the border with Poland, in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia, with about 49,000 inhabitants. It developed as an industrial city known for hard coal mining from the mid-eighteenth century until mining ended there in 2021, a history that shaped the region's economic and demographic development.
