Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania and the fourth-largest in the Baltic states, an important centre of Lithuanian economic, academic and cultural life. It was the largest city and centre of Kaunas County in the Duchy of Trakai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai Palatinate from 1413, and later the capital of the Kaunas Governorate in the Russian Empire from 1843 to 1915.
