Keflavik

Keflavik is a town in the Reykjanes region of southwest Iceland, founded by Scottish entrepreneurs in the sixteenth century around fishing and fish processing in a landscape of basalt rubble fields. During the Second World War the United States military built an airport nearby, and Cold War operations at Naval Air Station Keflavik made the site strategically important for monitoring Atlantic approaches until the American withdrawal in 2006. As of 2018 the combined population of Keflavik and neighboring Njardvik was 15,930, and Keflavik International Airport, the country's largest, remains the main gateway serving nearby Reykjavik. Known as the Beatle Town in the 1960s and 1970s for producing numerous musicians, Keflavik is also home to the sports club Ithrotta- og ungmennafelag Keflavikur and has appeared in works including Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising.
