Kepoi

Kepoi, also known as Cepoi, was an ancient Greek colony on the Taman Peninsula, three kilometers east of Phanagoria, in what is now Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It was founded by settlers from Miletus in the sixth century BC, and during the Hellenistic period it was controlled by the kings of the Cimmerian Bosporus, one of whom gave an estate there known as the Gardens to Gylon, grandfather of the Athenian orator Demosthenes. The town reached its height in the first centuries AD before the Huns and Goths ended its prosperity in the fourth century. Soviet excavations beginning in 1957 uncovered rich finds, including a marble statue of a Greek goddess, and more than 400 burials were explored at the site in the 1960s and 1970s, though the rest of the site has since been submerged by the Sea of Azov.
