Khorog is the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in Tajikistan, at about 2,123 metres elevation in the Pamir Mountains at the confluence of the Gunt and Panj rivers. Russian forces built a fort there in 1896, it became the regional capital in 1925 and was founded as a city in 1932; its population was 30,500 in 2020. Its economy depends heavily on the Aga Khan Foundation as almost its only source of cash income, and it is home to Khorog State University and the Pamir Botanical Garden, the second-highest botanical garden in the world.
