Kirkenes is a town in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county, in the far northeastern part of Norway, lying on a peninsula along the Bøkfjorden arm of the Varangerfjorden just a few kilometers from the Norway-Russia border. The town covers about 2.29 square kilometers and had a population of 3,404 in 2023, rising to almost 8,000 when the neighboring villages of Hesseng, Skytterhusfjellet, Sandnes and Bjørnevatn are included.
