Kitakyushu is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, with an estimated population of about 941,000 in 2019, making it the second-largest city in Fukuoka Prefecture. Formed in 1963 through the merger of five industrial cities on the strait between Kyushu and Honshu, Kitakyushu became one of Japan's leading centers of steel and heavy industry during the country's postwar growth, and has since been recognized internationally for its environmental recovery and pollution-control efforts after decades of industrial contamination.
