Knossos is an archaeological site and ancient urban center on Crete, Greece, about 5 kilometers south of the historic center of Heraklion. Founded as a Neolithic settlement around 7000 BC, it grew into the largest center of Minoan civilization, regarded as Europe's earliest advanced society, and its Palace of Minos, first built around 1900 BC and rebuilt after a destruction around 1700 BC before finally burning around 1350 BC, is closely tied to the Greek myths of King Minos, the Minotaur, Theseus and Ariadne.
