Kolding is a Danish seaport city at the head of Kolding Fjord in southeast Jutland, seat of Kolding Municipality and part of the Triangle Region alongside Fredericia and Vejle. First documented in 1231, the city was the site of battles in 1368 to 1369, 1644, 1658 and 1849, suffered a major tornado in 1955 and a fireworks factory disaster in 2004, and it earned UNESCO recognition as a Design City in 2017. As of January 2026 the municipality had 96,214 residents with 63,664 in the city proper, the eighth largest city in Denmark, and Kolding functions as a transportation, commercial and manufacturing center with significant shipbuilding. Its principal landmark is Koldinghus, a medieval royal castle built by King Eric Klipping in the thirteenth century and the last royal residence in Jutland, alongside the thirteenth century Church of Saint Nicholas, the Trapholt art museum and the Geografisk Have botanical garden.
