Komotini is a city in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in northeastern Greece and serves as that region's capital. Its municipality had a population of 65,243 at the 2021 census. The city is home to the Democritus University of Thrace, founded in 1973, and has a significant Muslim minority that was exempted from the 1922 to 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey.
