Konye-Urgench, also known as Köneürgenç or Old Urgench, is a city in north Turkmenistan near the border with Uzbekistan, with a total population of 37,176 in 2022. It occupies the site of the ancient town of Gurganj, which held the ruins of the capital of Khwarazm; the town's inhabitants abandoned the old site in the early eighteenth century to build a new settlement, leaving the ancient ruins undisturbed. The ruins of Old Urgench were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.
