Korçë is the eighth most populous city of Albania and the seat of Korçë County and Korçë Municipality, standing on a plateau about 850 meters above sea level surrounded by the Morava Mountains. The city had a population of 51,152, with 75,994 across the wider municipality. Its urban core, the Old Bazaar area, was founded by the Ottoman Albanian nobleman Ilias Bey Mirahori in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, though the city took its modern shape during a period of rapid growth in the nineteenth century. It is the largest city of eastern Albania and an important cultural and industrial center.
