Kortrijk

Western Europe

Kortrijk is a Belgian city and municipality in the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region, on the Leie river between Ghent and the French city of Lille, with about 80,000 inhabitants and serving as the capital of the Kortrijk arrondissement. It grew from the Roman settlement of Cortoriacum into a major medieval center for flax and textile production. The city is particularly known for the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, in which Flemish forces defeated French knights, an event still commemorated as a regional holiday, and its largely preserved medieval architecture includes a UNESCO listed belfry and beguinage within one of the largest car free urban zones in Belgium.
