Kostanay is a city on the Tobol River in northern Kazakhstan and the administrative center of Kostanay Region. Russian settlers founded it in 1879 as Nikolaevsk, and it gained official city status in 1893, with a rail link built in 1912 to 1913 connecting it to Troitsk and Chelyabinsk. It was renamed Kustanay after the Bolshevik takeover in 1918 and took its current name in the years after Kazakhstan's post-Soviet independence. Its population was 277,757 in 2026, and the city holds 173 recognized monuments of historical and cultural significance.
