Kota Kinabalu, colloquially known as KK, is the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia, and also the capital of the Kota Kinabalu District and the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city lies on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea, with the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, to its east. The 2020 census recorded a municipal population of 500,421, and the wider area including the Penampang and Putatan districts reached 731,406.
