Kota is the third-largest city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, on the Chambal River about 230 kilometers south of Jaipur. Its population passed 1.5 million by 2024. Founded as a walled city in the fourteenth century, Kota became the capital of the princely state of Kota in 1625 and is known today as India's "coaching capital" for the more than 200,000 students who move there each year to prepare for national engineering and medical entrance exams; it is also India's first traffic-signal-free city.
