Kukes is a city in northeastern Albania, serving as the capital of Kukes County near the border with Kosovo. The modern city was built in the 1970s to replace an older town of the same name that was flooded by the creation of the Fierza reservoir on the Drin river. It sits along a key overland route linking Albania to Kosovo and has functioned as a transit and market town for the surrounding mountainous region.
