La Plata is the capital city of Buenos Aires province, Argentina, with a population of about 773,000 in its partido and nearly 940,000 across its wider metropolitan area. Founded in 1882 as a planned capital laid out on a strict grid with diagonal avenues, La Plata is home to a major national university and a large cathedral, and serves as the political and administrative center of Argentina's most populous province.
