Latina, Lazio

Latina is the capital of the Province of Latina in the Lazio region of central Italy, about 62 kilometers south of Rome. Founded on 30 June 1932 under the name Littoria by Benito Mussolini as part of a project to drain the long-marshy Pontine Marshes, it was inaugurated after just 171 days of construction and renamed Latina in 1946 following the Second World War. As of 2024 the city had 127,486 inhabitants, the second largest in the region after Rome, and it is counted among the youngest cities in Italy, laid out with rationalist architecture by architects including Marcello Piacentini and Angiolo Mazzoni.
