Le Tampon is the fourth largest commune on Reunion Island, a French overseas department and region, occupying the south central part of the island next to Saint Pierre. Its population grew from 24,335 in 1961 to 82,579 in 2023, spread across 165.43 square kilometers ranging from 287 to 2,418 meters in elevation with both humid subtropical and oceanic climate zones. In the early 20th century the commune was a base for Sitarane, a figure notorious for murder and sorcery, and its city hall was completed in 1965.
