Lebedus

Lebedus was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, an ancient Greek settlement on the Kisik Peninsula near modern Urkmez in Izmir Province, in western Anatolia. It flourished from the Iron Age through the Classical and Hellenistic periods, with activity continuing into the Roman era, and it was known for its mineral springs and trade. Limited farmland and an inadequate harbor kept Lebedus smaller than other Ionian cities, but it saw a revival under Roman rule, when it became a gathering place for theatrical performers exiled from neighboring Teos and hosted festivals in honor of Dionysus.
